THE Mayor and City Council (M&CC) heard last Monday that from 2016 to present, no approval from the council has ever been granted to the owner of the popular ‘Jerk Hut’ on Cummings Street for the business to operate there.

The Engineer’s Department recently called for the removal of this business which is located at the Merrimans Mall, facing Cummings Street, and for all operations to be ceased there immediately.

But the owner subsequently visited Mayor Ubraj Narine’s office, who in turn, wanted clarity from the council. He raised the issue at the most recent statutory meeting.

Acting Town Clerk, Sherry Jerrick, offered that there has not been a council decision permitting the business to operate at this location.

The Jerk Hut had no permission to operate since 2016

According to her, the business owner, who visited her office, told her that it was not the council who was after him, but a particular councillor instead.
Deputy City Engineer, Kenson Boston, according to Jerrick, pointed the business owner to the councillor, and then to her.

Councillor Oscar Clarke said Boston’s operation in this matter has been nothing short of unprofessional. “The entire council is replete with unprofessional staff,” Clarke charged, adding that he has been able to recognise such behaviour on many occasions.

He reasoned that no matter what low class a person comes from, he should make an effort to improve himself. He found Boston’s calling of a councillor’s name in this manner to be very unprofessional.

Councillor Denroy Tudor noted that the owner of the business was to cease his operation and meet with the City Council. This decision was not implemented, he observed.
He said he found it troubling when the business owner approached him personally about the matter, owing to Boston’s pointing him out.
