IN preparation for the reopening of school, the Georgetown Rotary Club on Saturday last, distributed 30 backpacks to children within the Sophia area.

President of the Georgetown Rotary Club, Peter Peroune, in his remarks, explained that the club facilitates many projects in collaboration with its sub-clubs or Rotaract clubs. One such collaboration is the Sophia Literacy programme, where the Rotary Club collaborates with the Rotaract Club to facilitate the Programme, and has worked with it to conduct Saturday’s backpack distribution exercise to the children in the programme.

Peroune expressed pleasure that the Georgetown Rotary Club was able to not only facilitate the students within the Literacy Programme, but that the club was able to, with the assistance of various sponsors, provide the back to school supplies to the children of the Sophia area.

He further stated that Education is very important and that children are the future of our country, and our future leaders, and the programme was launched to ensure the children of Sophia are able to benefit from a programme that would enable them to have educational resources at their disposal.

Additionally, the Children in the Sophia Literacy programme received backpacks to ensure each child is assisted with resources for the reopening of school.

Community Service Director for the Rotaract Club of Georgetown, Angenie Abel, explained that The Sophia literacy programme was launched in 1999, and was formed as part of the Rotaract mandate of supporting literacy.

The programme, according to Abel, is a literacy-based one where the students are taught in the areas of phonics, grammar and vocabulary. It is hosted at the Pattenson Community Centre every Saturday from 9:00 hours to 11:00 hours and is free of cost to the children in attendance.

Furthermore, Peroune gave some insight about other areas of the club’s collaboration. “We are a service organization and our basic objective is to give back to our community through our various projects. Some of the projects we have done are construction of water wells in several rural areas, and we have also constructed the Red Cross convalescent home,” Peroune said.

The Georgetown Rotary Club has also distributed some additional backpacks at the National Library on Monday.

Rotary International has been in existence since 1905, and in May celebrated its 60th anniversary.
