A PEACEFUL protest was held on Thursday in front of the Ministry of the Presidency on Vlissengen road by the Movement Against Parking Meters (MAPM) under theme “Disrespect for the constitution=Disrespect for Guyanese”.
According to one of the protestors, Johnathon Yearwood, the purpose of the protest was to ask the government to honour and respect the constitution, which is the supreme law of the land. He said having lost the no-confidence motion the government has not yet abided by the constitution.
Yearwood believes the government has done everything but adhere to the constitution, since he noted that the government stated recently they will not be resigning. He explained that resignation is one of the conditions of the constitution, when a no-confidence motion is lost; the government, president and cabinet must resign until the new election is held.
Carlos Gonzales, a colleague of Yearwood expressed disappointment with the very little support received at the protest, seeing that is was a peaceful one.
He noted that for too long Guyanese have had a culture of silence especially about issues that every Guyanese should be focusing on since it pertains to the development of the country. Many Guyanese, Carlos believes, lack the will to do so. He said, “we rather sit back and let other people do it, I have decided for myself this has been happening for too long and I personally from now on will take a stand with my colleagues”.
