— millions of dollars approved for construction of schools, roads, and bridges
A US$2.25M contract has been awarded for the design, supply and installation of a 150kw hydropower plant at Chiung River, Kato Village, Region Eight. According to Director-General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joseph Harmon, this multimillion-dollar project was awarded to B and J Civil Works under the Ministry of Public Infrastructure’s Hinterland Electrification Company Inc.
This contract is just but one of the several contracts amounting to millions of dollars that have been approved for the constructions of schools, roads and bridges, among other critical infrastructural development.
At his post-Cabinet press briefing on Wednesday at the Ministry of the Presidency, the Director- General disclosed that Cabinet noted the award of contracts by the country’s procurement agencies, including a $25M contract for the construction of a primary school at Eteringbang, Upper Mazaruni, Region Seven. That contract, according to Harmon, was awarded to K and B Project Management Company.
Under the Ministry of Communities, $50.8M was awarded to Memorex Enterprise for the extension of the new Diamond-Grove Primary School located within Region Four. Added to that, a $49.2M contract was awarded to M and B Investments for the general rehabilitation of Bladen Hall Multilateral School at Bladen Hall, East Coast Demerara, Region Four.
Approximately $18.1M was awarded for electrical upgrades to the University of Guyana’s library’s new wing.
The East Ruimveldt Market in Georgetown will also undergo significant rehabilitation. According to the Director-General, a contract to the sum of $39.1M was awarded to Mohammed Ramzan Ali Khan Construction for upgrades to the facility.
It was disclosed too that 200 meters of geotextile tubes would be installed along the foreshore of Anna Regina on the Essequibo Coast in Region Two. That project was awarded to Ideal Engineering Services at the cost of $31.5M.
In Region Four, the Alliance Road at Timehri, East Bank Demerara will be constructed at the cost of $24.4M. The contract was awarded to Puran Brothers Disposal Inc. while Chung’s Global Enterprise was awarded $17.5M for the reconstruction of Area ‘J’ Industry Bridge, on the East Coast of Demerara. The bridge at Little Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara will also be reconstructed by BJ Civil Works at the cost of $18.6M.
Harmon disclosed too that a $92.8M contract was awarded to Builders Hardware, General Supplies and Construction for the construction of the New Amsterdam Magistrates and Commission of Titles’ Living Quarters in Region Six.
A and S General Contractors Inc was awarded $28.7M for the supply and delivery of boulders at Broomhall, Mahaicony, Region Five. A total of $14.9M was awarded for the supply, delivery and installation of testing of equipment at the Essequibo Technical Institute under the Ministry of Education.
