AN alleged bomb threat made at the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) Headquarters early Thursday morning forced scores of staffers and clients to evacuate the Camp Street premises until members of the disciplined forces gave the ‘all-clear’.

GRA’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Fabian Clowes, recounted to this newspaper that approximately 09:30 hours, the safety alarm sounded throughout the premises which signalled that all persons should evacuate.

It was reported that this was due to the threat of a bomb being at the headquarters.

Clowes further recounted that by the time persons exited the building, members of both the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Fire Service were on the scene to take control of the situation. Persons assembled on Camp Street in the meantime.

Around 30 to 45 minutes later, the PRO said an ‘all-clear’ was given by the members of the disciplined forces, and persons were able to return to their work and transacting their business.

In February of this year, there was another alleged ‘bomb scare’ at the GRA headquarters. It was later discovered that there was no bomb but a small fire on the third floor of the building. That fire was contained in a timely manner.

During Thursday’s scare, Clowes opined that staffers were better prepared to respond to the alarm and evacuate.

“On a few occasions, we conducted simulation exercises… and based on those, the staff responded [quickly],” Clowes said.
