THE body of a 68-year-old man was found floating in a canal at Number 29 Village, West Coast Berbice at around 09:00hrs on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Michael London also known as ‘Chucky’ of Number 29 Village. Neighbours said that his remains were found in a canal which he normally crosses to get to his home. Reports said that the man attended a Mother’s Day gathering on the other side of the canal not far from where he lived, and had been helped to cross the bridge some time late Sunday night after he seemed to be ready to go home.
It is believed that after being helped to cross the bridge, he had attempted to return to the venue of the gathering sometime later and had fallen overboard in the process. The reporter, who visited the scene shortly before the body was removed, saw no marks of violence on it. London, a pensioner, was well- known in the villages between Number 29 and Lovely Lass WCB where he was frequently seen walking on roadway on a daily basis to and from relatives who provided him with meals.
His remains were taken to Anthony’s Funeral Parlour at Fort Wellington pending a post-mortem examination. According to the police, an investigation into the circumstances in which the man met his death, is ongoing.
