Estate worker hit by fire tender hospitalised

AN investigation has been launched into an accident on Friday at the Albion Estate Central Field Workshop which has left a 51-year-old labourer fighting for his life.

According to information received, at approximately 06:45hrs, Ganesh Roberts, a resident of Belvedere, East Berbice, Corentyne, was sweeping an area when a fire tender, that was reversing, slammed into him.

He was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital in an unconscious state.

Speaking with Guyana Chronicle, a source related that the fire truck was in the workshop when it was collected by a driver who got into the vehicle and reversed, not knowing that Roberts was behind. Roberts was pinned by the rear wheels of the vehicle and was seen in a bending position.

A relative related that Roberts, a father of two, is in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. He suffered injuries to the lungs and shoulders and had several broken ribs.

The Guyana Chronicle understands that the driver of the truck was taken into custody but was subsequently released.
