THE last set of quarter-final matches in Linden Town Week’s inaugural Mayor’s Cup football championship will be played at 19:00hrs today, when game one brings together third-seed Haynes & Lewis Winners Connection and Silver Shattas. The other tie features Blueberry Hill against Net Rockers.
Having defeated Shattas in the GTT League 2-1, Winners Connection are confident that they can win tonight’s match-up which gets underway from 19:00hrs.
With talented Javon Smith and captain Marmalaque Davidson spear-heading this young combination, Winners Connection, with such other players like Allan Garrette in defence, Frederick Hunte on the wing and Errol David also holding his own at the back, could prove a handful for their opponents, again.
However, Shattas are seeking a win after that narrow defeat and, with Kellon Major in goal, they can seek a positive effort from Romel Matthews and Marley Major at the back-line while Jehu Regis, Robin Adams and Randy Pickering look to take the game to their rivals.
The second game at 21:00hrs should be interesting also, since Net Rockers are heavily favoured to get the better of Blueberry Hill.
The Rockers, ranked number two in Upper Demerara, will hope to win after a 7-0 blotting out of Blueberry Hill in their league clash and with players like Denzil Pryce, Dameion Wills, Leonard Wilson and Clarence Huggins in their lineup, should be able to turn back the challenge of the Blueberry Hill side.
But Blueberry Hill boys are riding on the solid 2-0 win they gained against Hi Stars. Renee Gibbons and Wayne Wilson will be upfront while Mark Liddell and Lloyd Williams will control the midfield. Owen Wills is in defence and one may well see the return of Kelon Neblett in goal.
If the opening win by Blueberry Hill was enough to galvanise their followers then it could help their cause on the pitch tonight.
