–GCA, Berbice looking to host champion-of-champions

THE New Building Society has promised to continue their support of the second-division competition in the capital city owing to the excellent organisational structure by the Georgetown Cricket Association over the last seven years of the NBS second-division 40-over competition.

On Friday evening, director of the bank, Dr. Nanda Gopaul, expressed his appreciation to the GCA for the work that they have done. He said that the GCA has demonstrated leadership and foresight in the running of the NBS competition.
“[Roger] Harper, president of the GCA, has demonstrated leadership in cricket and we have recognised that.”

The former Minister of Labour added that the tournament “could not have been better”. Due to the “excellent” work by the officials, Dr. Gopaul indicated that the NBS would continue the sponsorship.

The director added that the game has transcended the on-field battle. “We believe that the game must not just be seen as a sport, but as a unifying tool.”

Additionally, NBS will look to have a champion-of-champions contest between the top teams in Berbice (in the bank-sponsored competition) against the best teams in the GCA/NBS competition.

Although the contest is still in the planning stage, Dr. Gopaul did announce that it will be a T20 format.
GCA president Roger Harper said that the upcoming battle would give the youngsters, both in Georgetown and Berbice, more exposure.
To the NBS he said, “We are looking forward to a long and fruitful partnership, we look forward to your support.”

GEORGETOWN FINAL
On Friday evening, GCC defeated Everest by 162 runs in the final of the GCA/NBS 40-over Second-Division Competition.

Winston Forrester, who spanked nine fours for a 68-ball 62, was named man-of-the-match, while Ronaldo Alimohamed, who sent back the middle order with 3-26 from six overs, collected the best bowling performance trophy. Saheed Mohamed, who had16 stiches due to an injury to one of his fingers during the semi-final, kept Everest in the game with three outstanding catches, and he was duly rewarded.

Meanwhile, Police’s spinner Jason Heyliger finished the tournament with the best bowling figures (5-11 versus Transport). Also picking up trophies were Transport’s Azeem Azeez (who finished with a tournament-high 23 wickets), DCC’s Sachin Singh, who finished with the highest runs in the tournament (171) against Diplomats and the most runs in the tournament, and UG’s Melroy Stephenson, who finished with eight catches.

Singh, a national U-19 cricketer, also finished as the MVP of Zone A after tallying 436 runs at an average of 72.67 runs per innings. He also took one wicket and two catches.
Meanwhile, Transport’s batsman Sunil Singh finished as Zone B’s MVP after tallying 230 runs at an average of 59, to go with four catches.
