MARK Angoy, 44, was on Tuesday, April 02, 2019, sentenced to 14 years imprisonment after pleading guilty to unlawfully killing 13-month-old Arianne Gill four years ago.

Angoy, an ex-member of the Guyana Defence Force, and formerly of Craig, East Bank Demerara, made his appearance before Justice Navindra Singh at the High Court and opted to plead guilty to a charge of manslaughter.

The charge reads that on October 18, 2015, at Eastville Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, Angoy killed 13-month-old Arianne Gill.

Angoy pleaded guilty to feloniously wounding Gill’s aunt, Ashley Wellington, with intent to maim, disfigure or cause her grievous bodily harm
Angoy was represented by attorney-at-law Mark Conway, while the state was represented by prosecutors Tuanna Hardy, Abigail Gibbs and Teriq Mohammed.

Attorney Conway pleaded with the court that his client opted to plead guilty to the charges and did not waste the court’s time.

Justice Singh explained that based upon Angoy’s actions he had acted in anger and in addition to the 14-year sentence for the manslaughter, also imposed an eight-year jail term  for felonious wounding.

Justice Singh told Angoy to use his time in prison to attend anger-management classes and also skill training, which will assist him in turning over a new leaf upon his release.
The sentences will run concurrently, while the time Angoy spent on remand will be deducted by the prison service.

According to reports, Angoy shared a relationship with Gill’s grandmother, who is Wellington’s mother. Angoy had been separated from his former lover who had filed a restraining order against him, citing years of physical abuse.

The attack occurred on October 18, 2015, at Eastville Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, where Angoy entered the home armed with a gun and discharged three rounds at the children, who were watching television in the living room.

Angoy was previously charged with the murder of a man in 1998 at Twelve and a Half Miles, Issano, Mazaruni, Region Seven, but was later acquitted.
