UNDER the theme “Promoting and Fostering Healthy Habits”, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) Welfare Office recently held a sensitisation workshop for ranks of ‘A’ Division, aimed at informing them of its services.

The workshop was supervised by Deputy Superintendent, Jewel Sullivan, and other officers of the Welfare Office, along with representatives from the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) and the Guyana Trinidad Mutual Insurance (GTM) company.

Public Relations Officer, Diane Lewis-Baxter, and Keisha White from NIS informed the ranks about the benefits payable by NIS.

Lewis-Baxter, in her presentation, elaborated on the terms and conditions in claiming for benefits.

The scheme provides for payment of benefits grouped under three branches, namely long-term, short-term and industrial.

It was explained that under the long-term benefits, there are old age, invalidity, survivors, funeral and constant attendance.

The benefits under short-term includes sickness, sickness benefit medical care, and maternity; while industrial benefits covers injury, disablement and industrial death benefits.

Wazir Khan, who represented GTM, gave the ranks a breakdown on the benefits offered by the insurance scheme.

Deputy Superintendent Sullivan informed the ranks that the Welfare Office was designed to assist ranks with domestic or psychological needs.

She expounded on the services rendered to ranks from the department such as the welfare loans, bursary awards, benevolent funds and fire assistance.

Ranks were also advised to visit the Welfare Office and make use of the services offered, not only monetary, but also the welfare officer who is also available to listen to those who may need an advice on social issues.

Meanwhile, on March 12, the GPF Welfare Department in collaboration with the NIS and the Ministry of Public Health, hosted a medical outreach at the Fort Wellington Police Station Recreational Facility where ranks and civilians received Yellow Fever vaccines, HIV testing, body mass, blood pressure and glucose tests.

The ranks were also given health advice from Public Health Ministry representative Carolyn Muffat, who spoke about food-based dietary guidelines.

Additionally, Woman Deputy Superintendent, Jewel Sullivan, and her team highlighted the function of the Welfare Department and the services offered.

She also noted that ranks benefit from bursary awards for children who were outstanding at the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA).

Some 80 ranks and 10 civilians benefitted from the outreach.

The outreach is expected to be continued throughout the divisions by the Welfare Department at ‘D’ Division (Leonora Police Station) on March 19, 2019;
‘E’ Division (Mc Kenzie Police Station) on March 26; ‘F’ Division (Bartica Police Station) on April 2; ‘F’ Division (Lethem Police Station) on April 9; ‘G’ Division (Anna Regina Police Station) on April 16, 2019; and Special Constabulary Headquarters on April 19, 2019.
