Taxi driver remanded after narcotics was found in vehicle

A TAXI driver was on Monday arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan on a charge of possession of narcotics.
It is alleged that on March 6, 2019, in the Upper Essequibo Region, Bertanand Schultz had in his possession 1923 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

The 41-year-old is a resident of Middletown, Roraima, Berbice River and he is represented by Attorney-at–Law Damion Da Silva.
Da Silva told the court that on the day in question, his client was driving from Aroaima to Ituni to transport two packages when he was stopped by police officers who told him and the occupants of the vehicle to exit. A search was then conducted which revealed a haversack behind the driver’s seat. He noted that the other passengers were not charged.

According to Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield, one more person was in the vehicle along with Schultz when he was stopped at a road block. A search was then conducted and a grey haversack was recovered containing two compressed parcels in the back seat.

When questioned, Schultz allegedly confirmed to the police that it was his substance. Bail was refused to the defendant based on the seriousness of the offence. He will appear in court again on April 5, 2019.
