Bus operators, GEB guard to face charges for abusing cops

THE police have instituted charges against three men who, in separate incidents, assaulted and verbally abused police ranks during the course of this week.

In a statement, police said following a video of the policeman being assaulted on Wednesday, prompt action by ranks resulted in the apprehension of the driver and conductor of Minibus BTT 9225 (Route 44 Zone), later the said day.

The suspects: Carlos Bacchus, 29, and Troy Peters 34 years old of Victoria, East Coast Demerara, are expected to be arraigned before a magistrate to answer to a number of charges which include breach of conditions of road service licence, failure to produce a driver’s licence, failure to comply with direction, and resisting and assaulting a peace officer.

Also following another video circulating on social media of a driver of a private security service, who can be heard being very abusive and insulting towards a policeman who was conducting traffic duties on Broad St, Charlestown; he too has been detained and is assisting with the investigation.

“The Guyana Police wishes to inform citizens to report all incidents of misconduct of its ranks to the relevant authorities in efforts to maintain peace and good order in society, rather than being confrontational since such behaviour will not be condoned,” the statement added.
