A CUBAN doctor and his wife were on Thursday sentenced to 12 months imprisonment by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, for uttering forged Peru passports to a local immigration officer at Moleson Creek, Berbice.

It is alleged that, Alexi Vasquez, 38, a doctor, and his wife Juliette Sanchez, 35, on February 13, 2019 at Moleson Creek, Corentyne, Berbice, with intent to defraud, uttered their forged Republic of Cuba passports to Immigration officer, Constable Skeet Wright, in favour of themselves, purporting to show that the passports were issued by the Peru Immigration Services.

The couple, with the aid of an interpreter, pleaded guilty to the charge.
According to Police Prosecutor, Gordon Mansfield, the couple came to Guyana on February 11, 2019, via the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) and was nabbed two days later at Moleson Creek, while attempting to go over to Suriname with the forged passports.
The couple, when arrested, told the police that they had wanted to travel the world and paid a lawyer US$5,000 for the Peru passports while back in Cuba.

The chief magistrate sentenced the couple to 12 months in jail after considering their early guilty plea.  The duo will be deported after serving their time behind bars.
