THE Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) yesterday announced a list of 22 players both local- and overseas-based, who will vie for spots on the team to represent Guyana at the 2021 FIBA AmeriCup pre-qualifiers tournament.

Guyana will be the Caribbean’s representative at the tournament which, after the 2017 edition, will be played every four years, following their historic performance at the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championship where they won, for the first time, the ‘John Yates Trophy’ and earned the right to be called ‘Caribbean Champs’.
The Junior Hercules-coached side will play in ‘Pool B’ of the February 22-24 qualifiers in Tunja, Colombia, where they are expected to face the home country (Colombia), Paraguay and Bolivia.

Rawle Marshall

Former Dallas Mavericks and Indiana Pacers guard Rawle Marshall, first Guyana-born NBA player, was called upon by coach Hercules after he had signalled his intention of returning to the National team.
Marshall, CBC MVP awardee Stanton Rose, Anthony Moe, Sean Duncan, Kevon Wiggins, and Delroy James are the overseas players named in the shortlisted team.

James, 31, a 6’8” power forward (whose older brother, Gordon, represented Guyana at the CBC tournament in 2015) had a successful 2017/2018 season with Greek side AEK Athens, where he was instrumental in the club’s winning their first FIBA Basketball Champions League (BCL) title, following a 100-94 points win over French side AS Monaco Basket.

The other players called to trials are: Harold Adams (Royals), Orlon Glasgow (Royals), Shaine Webster (Colts), Dave Causeway (Pacesetters), Yannick Tappin (Royals), Tyrone Hamid (Ravens), Akeem Crandon (Guardians), Kevon Emanuel (Berbice), Travis Belgrave (Eagles), Travis Burnett (Cobras), Carlos Edwards, Jamal Gilkes (Colts), Leanard Primo (Royals), Dominic Vincente (Royals) and Adrian Webster (Jets).

The trials will take place on February 9 (07:00hrs – 09:00hrs) and February 10 from 09:00hrs to 17:00hrs at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
