Authorities investigate fisherman’s drowning

ALMOST a week after a seaman attached to Pritipaul Singh Investment was presumed drowned after he fell overboard while at sea, the authorities have launched an investigation into the matter.

Navishwar Karamdatt called “Sharma”, 33, of Diamond, Housing, Scheme East Bank Demerara, died after he fell overboard last Wednesday morning.

Reports are that the Department of Labour is examining the issue and officials from the agency visited the wharf where the vessel, ‘Snook’ is moored to gather information on what occurred. Several safety issues were flagged, a source at the fishing company said on Tuesday.

Last Wednesday morning, the fishing vessel was out at sea when the captain reported that one of the crew members was missing. He immediately instructed the vessel return to shore.

The vessel which departed on December 3, 2018 returned to shore on Saturday last and the crew was detained.

Surveillance footage provided an account of the incident. Two men can be seen working at the stern of the vessel and one of them being pushed off by turbulent waves.

The victim was swallowed up by the sea by the time the vessel turned around to assist him.
