Religious organisations play important role in Guyana’s transformation

– Minister Harmon

Religious organisations have an important role to play in Guyana’s transformation, Minister of State Joseph Harmon said last evening.

The minister of state was at the time addressing leaders and attendees of the seventh Annual International Missions Conference, held at the Vreed-en-Hoop Wesleyan Church, Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara).

“In the quest for social development, the hardest work has been the spiritual transformation of broken minds and spirits into God-conscious and productive human beings. You of the Wesleyan Church have, along with other religious institutions, continued to reach out, to touch, and [to] heal, fully understanding that positive change in our society begins with the spiritual healing of the individual, then the family, then the community, and, finally, the nation,” said the minister of state.

He noted that there must be collaboration between the government and religious organisations to bring about a peaceful and harmonious transformation to Guyana.
“Our government has, in its own way, been working assiduously through coalition to promote social cohesion, social justice, and sustainable development… to provide the good life for all our people. We have commenced the process of a return to decency and spiritual values at all levels of our society…. We are resolved to solider on, confident that with God’s help and the assistance of [religious institutions] we will succeed in developing our country into a nation that puts God first, and lives and works in peace and harmony with justice for all,” he stated.

In closing, Minister Harmon, who was joined by Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson, urged the church leaders and congregants to engage the government on issues of good governance, emphasising that any issue deemed important by the church body is worth mentioning.
