– AG says to the BV/Triumph APNU candidates

THE Beterverwagting/Triumph Community on Friday evening announced the APNU candidates who are contesting, for the very first time, in the Local Government Elections.
The announcement was made at a public meeting in the community, with the Attorney General (AG) and Minister of Legal Affairs, Basil Williams in attendance.

The AG expressed how admiring he was of the young selected bunch, but ensured he interjected words of guidance as they embark upon the road ahead.

He explained to the group of young people that what they are going into is called Local Governance, and they are required to make decisions for the community in which they live. “That never happened before APNU and Brigadier David Arthur Granger, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana,” Williams said.

He said, “This is a training ground for you if you are interested in going further. You can’t just come in on the scene and just end up in the National Assembly. He [President Granger] wants you to learn how to govern at this level and then you move to the next level. You have to learn how to represent people and that is what this is all about, representation.”

“Politics is service.” AG said. “Once you have the idea that you are coming into politics to look after yourself, this is the wrong venue for you. You should feel proud that they have identified you to help serve the problems of the community. So that is what you have to do, serve. And when you serve without expectation of personal benefits, you get your rewards because people will see your genuineness and your commitment.”

He advised also that they ensure they have a full understanding of the system. “You’re operating on the new local government reform system. I believe we have to have some education done in these communities. I’m not sure that NDCs understand what they can do under this new system. We have to conduct sensitisation seminars… You could have a modernised community, you don’t have to wait and punish like before. Get up and reach out. You have a vibrant young core,” AG said emphatically.

The head of the group, Jimmoul Baggot told this newspaper that they are confident about winning in their various constituencies, since they are all like one family and all they have is the best interest of their people at heart.

He shared that he would have contested before as an independent candidate, and won and is therefore of the belief that with his vibrant team, he will most likely, have a repeat.
“I won the LGE as an independent candidate and now I am going with a very vibrant team so I am confident that we will get the support and votes from our people in the BV/Triumph area come November 12th. We have a team of young people ranging from ages 22 to mid-30s, all with vision, zeal, aspirations and dreams of transforming this village,” Baggot said.
The other candidates are Dwayne Duncan, Roxroy Brown, Reva Mentor, Wendy Andrews, Ariel Fortune-Inniss, Nicola Williams and Rishanna Lambert. All of whom are committed to heeding the advice of the AG, and serving their people wholeheartedly.
