THE South Georgetown Alumni Association hosted a book bag drive at St. Stephen’s Primary School on Friday, providing school supplies for students of that school.
Over 100 students benefited from the initiative which was held under the theme, “Together we bring dreams within reach.”

According to VP of Operations for the South Georgetown Secondary School Alumni Association, Colette Christian, the aim of the organisation is to academically support children of the St. Stephen’s Primary School.

“Whatever the reach is for a child, which is the sky is the limit, we will support and help that child or children of St. Stephen’s Primary School to attain and reach that goal,” Christian stated.

Christian told the Guyana Chronicle that the South Georgetown Secondary School Alumni Association has been supporting the St. Stephen’s Primary School since South Georgetown Secondary School is no longer in existence.

“Since there is no longer a South Georgetown Secondary School in existence anymore we look for the closest school in the area and this is the closest school.”

Christian told this newspaper that the organisation has been active for 10 years and has done a number of initiatives for the primary school including the construction of a playground, “putting up the school sign, and we continue to support them in sports activities and provide Mashramani outfits.”

Each student received one back pack containing school supplies such as pencils, rulers, crayons, amongst others and was treated to a snack.

Head teacher of St. Stephen’s Primary School, Wendy Johnson, expressed sincere gratitude to the organisation, adding that it makes her happy when “corporate society could see the importance of coming on board. Education is a holistic thing and therefore, I believe that as long as we have the support, that things are going to happen. So we are very very grateful for this venture.”

Johnson is also encouraging other corporate sponsors to come on board with St. Stephen’s Primary School.
