Prosecutor favours bail

– but on certain conditions

A 21-year-old man was on Thursday remanded to prison by Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman on an attempt-murder charge.

It is alleged that on September 24, 2018 at Stevedore Street, North Ruimveldt, Narish Samaroo caused grievous bodily harm to Shane Cooper with intent to murder him.
The welder, who resides at James Street Albouystown, has denied the charge and retained the services of Attorney-at-Law Latchmie Rahamat.

And while her application for bail, on the grounds that her client was kept in police custody long past the mandatory 72 hours, was not denied, the prosecutor, Inspector Shallon Daniels asked that there be certain conditions attached to it.

According to the police, the virtual complainant was plying his trade in North Ruimveldt when three males, one of whom happened to be the accused, sidled up to him, demanded that he hand over all his jewellery, and when he refused and sought to take cover, shot him in the leg and back.

The magistrate, taking all the foregoing into account, refused bail and remanded the accused to prison until October 17.
