– LGE hopefuls say, for incident-free Nomination Day

WITH submissions slated to begin at 10:00hrs sharp, the Guyana Chronicle wasted no time Friday and hit the road early to monitor the proceedings.

The occasion was the much-anticipated Nomination Day shenanigans for this year’s Local Government Elections (LGEs), set for November 12, whereby political parties, voluntary groups and individuals with approved symbols were expected to hand in their lists of candidates to the prescribed
returning officers (ROs) countrywide.

With our team assigned to the East Bank corridor, we worked our way from Eccles to Diamond, Herstelling and Mocha-Arcadia, then headed straight for Soesdyke-Huis’t Coverden where, in spite of the heavy downpour, theturnout was reasonably high.

That’s where we met Eon Smith, the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) representative for that particular Local Authority Area (LAA).

Smith said his group is contesting seven constituencies, and that they’d already presented their list of candidates. The presentation was done at the office of the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) on the Soesdyke Public Road.
Like most of the persons to whom we spoke on that day, he deemed the process smooth, and his group’s chances of winning in that area very good.

At the same location, the Guyana Chronicle also caught up with Everton Poole, who is the regional representative for the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), and he, too, was upbeat about the whole affair, saying that for him it was a very bright day even though it was raining cats and dogs.

Our next stop was Haruruni-Yarrowkabra on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, where we met APNU representative Melissa Munroe and her team at the Yarrowkabra Primary School.
She said that apart from being speedy, the process was so efficient that they were able to leave long before noon, so they could go home and prepare lunch for their families.

Also at the same venue was PPP/C Election Committee Campaign Manager for Huis’t/ Coverden, Ansari Ferreira, and he said that they were second on the list to submit their list of candidates. He said, too, that the process went without any hiccups, and that the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is to be commended for a job well done.

It’s a sentiment that was expressed at all seven of the locations the Guyana Chronicle visited that day, starting from Eccles all the way up to Yarrowkabra.
