FYF dominates 2nd round of preparations  for Caribbean tournament

By Michel DaSilva

THE Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) Boxing Gym dominated the second round of the Guyana Boxing Association’s (GBA) Mike Parris Under-16 tournament which continued last Saturday at the Andrew `Six Head’ Lewis Boxing Gym, winning eight of nine fights that were contested on the day’s card.

The FYF gym won six out of six Schoolboys contests and two of two junior fights.

It should be noted that on June 9 when the five-programme preparatory tournament began, the Harpy Eagles (HE) Gym came out on top, winning two fights in the Schoolboys category and three in the junior segment. However, on Saturday, the FYF turned things around, dominating both the Schoolboys and Juniors competitions.

Things started rolling from the first fight when Vickasy Graham secured a walkover victory from Vergenoegen Boxing Gym’s (VBG) Hazel Adams in an all-female encounter.

This was followed by a technical knock-out (TKO) win for Moses Crawford (FYF) over Kellon Pierre (HE). Michael Mangal (FYF) then followed up with a unanimous points-decision victory over HE’s Joel Mamers.

Alex Adams (VBG) then scored a unanimous points-decision win against HE’s Collin Williams before FYF’s Seon Graham forced the referee to stop his contest against HE’s Dextroy Brimmo at one minute 24 seconds of the third round.

Malachi Jones (FYF) then secured a unanimous points-decision win against Joel Anthony (HE) and this was followed by Jones’ clubmate, Stephon McDonald’s win against HE’s Enoch Munroe after the referee stopped the contest at one minute five seconds of the third round.

Richard Howard (FYF) continued FYF’s dominance of last Saturday’s tournament by registering a unanimous points-decision win against VBG’s Doron Williams and his team mate Fitz Heywood closed FYF’s winning ways with a unanimous points-win against fellow team mate Patrick Harvey.

There were two exhibition bouts that showcased uncapped talent, as Alesha Jackman and her sibling Abiola put on a thrilling three-round exhibition, as did Joshua Hinds and Shaquancy Wright.

When the five-day tournament began on June 9, Pierre had defeated Hazel Adams in a Schoolboys 55-59 weight contest. Moses Crawford lost to Colin Williams in a 60-64 kg contest, Michael Mangal lost to Alex Adams in a 70-74kg weight category and Stephon McDonald beat Joel Anthony in a 95-99kg contest.

In the Juniors category, Richard Howard had beaten Shequancy Wright in a 100-105kg  contest and Devon Wllliams lost to Leon Moore in a 105-110kg battle.

Meanwhile, St Lucia, Grenada, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Suriname and French Guiana have all indicated that they will be represented at the Caribbean Schoolboys and Junior championships which will be held here in Guyana from August 17 to 19.
