No bail for mother of four on drugs charge

A MOTHER of four was on Tuesday remanded to prison after she appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and charged for possession of marijuana.

The charge alleged that on the June 13, 2018 at the Bartica Stelling, Alia Campbell had in her possession 1,169 grammes of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

The 31-year old woman who resides at 161 Patentia, West Bank Demerara denied the charge that was read out to her in court.

Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield objected to bail based on the seriousness of the offence and the penalty it attracts.

He said on the day in question the defendant was a passenger on a speed boat at the Bartica Stelling. Police, acting on information received, contacted the defendant who was at the time in possession of a bucket which was searched and the marijuana discovered.
Bail was refused and Campbell was remanded to prison. The matter was adjourned to August 2, 2018 and transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
