– GECOM chair
GUYANA Elections Commission (GECOM) Chairman (ret’d) Justice James Patterson said the commission is an important part of democracy, since politicians come and go at the will of the electorate.
As such, he said the elections have to be free and fair, noting that like Siamese twins “You can’t have one without the other.”
Patterson made the remarks on Saturday at the commencement of a two-day training programme for elections staffers at the Cyril Potter College of Education.

He told the gathering to develop and understand the organisational structure that will facilitate the efficient conduct of local government.
The chairman also urged persons to acquaint themselves with a variety of teaching methods for delivering content pertaining to local government elections.
