A MOTHER of eight, Annetta Heywood, woke up and felt her three-bedroom cottage shaking violently and before she knew what was happening she was rendered homeless after her wooden house collapsed early Friday morning.

The woman of Lot 149 D’Andrade Street, Kitty told the Guyana Chronicle that she did not get to save any of her household items but she was thankful that no one was injured and she managed to get her children to safety.

On Friday morning when this newspaper visited, mostly men from the community were assisting the single mother to clear the area of debris since the entire fallen structure was dismantled.

Heywood said she has nowhere to go with her children, and as such, the men in the village would assist her in constructing a small dwelling house (shack) with the boards form the collapsed house until she can do better. But for now she has “to make do.”

Thus far, no one has come forward to assist except the villagers by lending a helping hand to clear the yard of debris and she is asking for any form of assistance to rebuild her house.

Heywood lived in that house for about 37 years and she stated that she was hoping to have a roof over her head at the earliest because she has school-aged children who needed a place to stay.

The woman has since approached the Guyana Relief Council for assistance because she had lost all her worldly possessions.
