Verdict looms for Stafrei Alexander

AT his re-trial, Stafrei Alexander’s defence attorney Stanley Moore on Thursday went into an intense cross examination of the victim, Curtis Thom who survived the March 23, 2015 shooting at Laing Avenue.

It was after this exercise that the State, after presenting its witnesses,closed its case and the accused was asked to lead his defence.

Both the defence and the State will make closing submissions.

The accused denied shooting at the victim on the morning in question.

The judge is expected to sum up the case next week after which the 12-member jury will retire to the jury room to deliberate and arrive at a verdict.

The trial started on Tuesday in which recaptured 2017 prison escapee, Stafrei Alexander appeared before Justice Sandil Kissoon and a 12-member jury in the Demerara High Court.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and was given the opportunity of a new trial before a different judge.

In presenting the State’s case, prosecutor Orinthia Schmidt told the court that the accused was indicted for two counts. The first count – attempt to commit murder and the second count – discharging a loaded firearm with intent (alternative counts) which took place on March 23, 2015 at Laing Avenue.

She said on the day in question at about 12:30 am, the accused discharged a loaded firearm at Curtis Thom with intent to murder him.
