A homeless man was on Friday sentenced to six months in prison on a simple larceny charge.

Bernard Anthony was accused of stealing a weeding machine worth $180,000, the property of the Guyana Police Force (GPF), from their Eve Leary headquarters on Thursday April 27, 2018.

Anthony told the court that he normally helped police ranks to wash wares and help around the training school and kitchen.
According to the police prosecutor, Anthony took the machine out of the training school, put it on his bicycle and was attempting to ride away when one of the policemen caught him.

In his defence, the man said that the machine was old and in parts.
Magistrate Leron Daly, before whom he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, sentenced him to six months in jail.
