THE National Sports Commission (NSC) through the Department of Sport in Region 2 has facilitated a one-week boxing programme which began last Monday and will run until tomorrow.

The boxing sessions are targeting Physical Education teachers from the secondary schools, as well as aspiring boxers from the various communities.
NSC coach Winsell Thomas is facilitating the sessions which will primarily seek to educate and equip teachers to promote the subject of no-contact boxing which forms part of the CXC curriculum.

Sessions are being held at various venues including the Bacchus Gym in Affiance, Dartmouth Community Centre as well as Queenstown Community Centre.

The coach will also take the opportunity to identify talent with the intention to further develop skills. In an invited comment with Chronicle Sport, Sports organiser Debra Daniels who is also the coordinator explained that the initial exercise will seek to create an awareness of the sport as well as seek to form clubs within the various communities and have competitions on a regular basis.

She further stressed that her department will undertake to provide administrative and technical support, given that there are highly talented boxers within the Region who can achieve greatness.

She is also appealing to the public to fully support the programme even as she expressed satisfaction with the enthusiasm and interest already shown by those who are attending.
The secondary schools participating are Anna Regina Secondary, Cotton Field, Charity, 8th of May, Abram Zuil, Johanna Cecilia and Aurora Secondary.
