THE Linden Mayor and Town Council (LMTC) has commenced a solid waste management campaign which involves closing down illegal dumpsites in the municipalities.

The campaign commenced on Saturday with illegal dumpsites being cleared on the Wismar shore. Several communities benefited including Wisroc, Block 22 and One Mile Back Road. Given its limitations in this capacity, the LMTC has partnered with Bosai Minerals Group Guyana (BMGG) to get the work done expeditiously.

Dumpsites on the Mackenzie shore were cleared on Monday. Deputy Mayor Wainwright Bethune said that his focus will continue along the path of environmental protection and waste management and, given the council’s limitations in this regard, will be collaborating with various stakeholders in an effort to get the work done.
“We have to get all stakeholders on board and let them understand the basic status (of the council). We cannot achieve this alone, we also need a big input from the residents,” Bethune said.

Mayor Waneka Arrindell encouraged persons to stop dumping illegally and to be patient with the Council, which is currently limited in the area of garbage collection.
The LMTC recently bought two compactor trucks and should be gifted one from BMGG. The Council also passed in its budget $1.5M to repair the two garbage trucks it currently has. With five working trucks, Arrindell is encouraging Lindeners to all be in possession of garbage bins that should be placed in front of their yards.

Their garbage should be placed in garbage bags which will be collected by the LMTC on scheduled days. At present, Lindeners are forced to pay a private company $1,600 per household for garbage collection. Arrindell posited that persons found dumping illegally will be fined and industrial illegal dumpers will be reported to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

She is also encouraging business owners to dump their garbage at the Kara Kara dumpsite since it is accessible to them. The access road to the dumpsite was repaired by the Ministry of Communities.

Meanwhile, as the official start of Linden Town Week 2018 is four days away, the Council is also de-bushing various areas on the Mackenzie shore in an effort to give the township a facelift.

Mayor Arrindell met with business owners at the popular ‘5 CORNER’ location, which is Linden’s entertainment hub and engaged them on their role in improving sanitation and beautifying their environment.
