THE 62-year-old market vendor who was shot on Monday during an armed robbery at the La Penitence Market, has been discharged from the Georgetown Public Hospital and has given the police a statement.
The pensioner, Deodat Ganesh, was shot when he tried to defend his wife, Meena, who was being attacked by two men, one armed with a handgun and the other with a knife.
The bandits had pounced on the woman and demanded the cash she had in her apron when her husband rushed to her rescue. Ganesh was wounded when the armed bandit fired a shot in his direction and a bullet grazed his head and another hit him in the abdomen.
The bandits after grabbing the apron with $150, 000 representing Easter Sunday and Monday sales, escaped on a bicycle.
Meena, who was back out selling on Tuesday, said she has been a vendor for the past 38 years and Monday’s incident was the first time such a brazen act was carried out at the market.
