Vendor in court for allegedly robbing cop

A YOUNG street vendor appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court Wednesday charged with attempting to rob policeman Shawn Beharry.
It is alleged that on March 2 on Brickdam and in the company of others, Gavin Ali of Alberttown attempted to rob the cop.

Ali initially pleaded guilty to the charge, stating that along with a friend, he was walking in the Brickdam area when the policeman passed and asked him if he wanted to snatch his phone. The policeman then left and he and his friend went away from the area.

The next day, along with his girlfriend, he was standing next to a man who sells coconut water and he saw the same policeman. The policeman called him and asked him for some money. He took out $5,000 cash and gave it to him and the lawman said it was not enough. He then advised the policeman to take him to the station.

Magistrate Fabayo Azore entered a not guilty plea after his explanation. Bail was granted in the sum of $25,000 and the matter was adjourned to April 4.
