PHILIP Sutherland on Tuesday pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter before Justice James Bovell-Drakes in the Georgetown High Court for the 2014 killing of Martin Roberts.
His plea was accepted.
State prosecutor Mandel Moore, told the court that on the day in question the accused killed Roberts. Sutherland is represented by defence attorney Siand Dhurjon who told the court that on January 9, 2014 in the County of Essequibo, the accused and the victim and some others were drinking yeast tonic in the Rupununi area when a fight broke out between the accused and another man.
Dhurjon added that somehow the victim got involved in the fight and received injuries.
The cause of death was given as asphyxiation, a broken larynx and blunt trauma to the head.
The accused will return to the Georgetown High Court before Justice James Bovell-Drakes for a probation report, followed by sentencing on March 27, 2018.
