21st Cheddi Jagan Memorial three-stage cycle race gets underway in Berbice

CONTRARY to a previous report, the first leg of the 21st Cheddi Jagan Memorial cycle race will be contested on the roadways in the county of Berbice on Sunday (March 11) then will head to West Demerara the following week on March 18.

The cyclists will assemble at the starting line in front of Freedom House, New Amsterdam for the official send-off at 09:00hrs. They will proceed to Number 55 Village in the Corentyne before heading back to Port Mourant for the finish.

Defending champion Shaquel Agard will be looking to make it two in a row after winning the Open category in 2017, clocking two hours six minutes 54 seconds (2h:6m:54s).
Dey and Niles were champions of the Juniors and Veterans respectively, while Shane Bourne won the Mountain Bikes and Shenika Teixeira was the top female rider.
The first six finishers in the Open category, as well as the first three in the Juniors, Veterans, Mountain Bikes and Females will be rewarded.

Meanwhile, Mohamed is reminding cyclists and officials that transportation to Berbice will depart Freedom House, Robb Street, at 05:00hrs on Sunday.
Following the completion of the first leg, cyclists will head over to the West Bank of Demerara on March 18. The second leg will pedal off at 08:30hrs from the Demerara Harbour Bridge (West Bank) and proceed to Bushy Park, East Bank Essequibo, before finishing at the point of origin. Top quality riding is expected from a number of cyclists.
