THE Legacy ‘Magnum Mash Cup’ Futsal tournament kicked-off on Saturday evening at the National Gymnasium with the likes of Sparta Boss, Gold is Money, Showstoppers and Linden’s Silver Bullets picking up opening wins.

After the ceremonial opening of the tournament by president of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Wayne Forde, Technical Director Ian Greenwood, Legacy’s Pastor Ewart Williams and Magnum Brand Coordinator, Edison Jeffords, it was down to business as fans were entertained with ten enthralling matches.

Thirty-two teams will compete in the round robin stage of the eight-day event, and fans saw the opening game between MBA All-Stars and Broad Street finishing 1-1.

Adrian Adonis (3rd) and Pernell Schultz (17th) pushed the exciting-looking Team Extreme to a 2 – 1 victory over Sophia.

The next game saw Delroy Dean’s double (5th and 15th) being enough to carry Ansa McAl All-Stars to a 2 – 0 win against the usually stubborn Channel-9 Warriors.

Officials from the GFF, sponsors and organisers meeting the teams just prior to the start of the tournament at the National Gymnasium.

Meanwhile, Silver Bullets, one of the teams from Linden, signalled their intentions to cash in on the tournament’s $400,000 first place prize, with their 5 – 0 drubbing of Kingston.

Jermaine Samuels (5th and 17th), Omar Williams (10th and 13th), along with Damion Williams’ goal in the 16th minute, were responsible for the Lindeners’ impressive win.

Showstoppers won their game via walkover. Tiger Bay, led by Orin Moore (3rd and 6th) and Wendell Austin (14th) went home 3 – 1 winners against Hustlers who saw their goal coming from Stephon Reynolds in the 12th minute.

NK Ballers and California Square settled for a 2 – 2 draw, while the National Rugby Team with the likes of skipper Ryan Gonsalves and Dwayne Schroder, fell 2 – 0 to Gold is Money.

In the evening’s final game, Buxton Diamond pushed tournament favourites Sparta Boss to the limit, who had to settle for a 1 – 0 win with their goal coming off the shoes of Dennis Edwards in the 10th minute.

The tournament will continue tomorrow, and matches will also be played on February 8th, 10th, 11th and 12th, with the semi-finals on February 14 and finals on February 18.

The team finishing second will go home with $200,000; third place $100,000 and fourth place $50,000.
