A 26-year-old man was on Thursday sentenced to three years jail and fined $135,000 by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for trafficking over three ounces of cannabis.
Harvey Moonsammy admitted that on December 23, at Parika, East Bank Essequibo he had 90grams of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
According to reports, on the day in question, police on mobile patrol in the Parika area saw the defendant with a haversack acting in a suspicious matter. The ranks intercepted him, and during a search on his person and the haversack, a parcel containing cannabis was found in the latter.
The unrepresented man told the court that he usually boils the cannabis to make tea and would drink a cup daily to cure his asthma.
