Sons of champions go after honours in Boxing Day slugfest

TWENTY-TWO of Guyana’s top amateur boxers will grace the ring when the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) stages one night of sizzling action, dubbed ‘Sons of Champions’ at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, on Boxing Day (December 26).

Eleven bouts are carded for the night and those pugilists on show would have had a parent who enjoyed some degree of success in the sport, thus instilling the desire in their sons’ genes.
The tournament was conceptualised by president of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle, and head of Briso Promotions, Seon Bristol. It aims to highlight the inherited qualities of contemporary amateur boxers.

Fans will anxiously anticipate the Desmond Amsterdam/Dennis Thomas middleweight shindig. Both have held victory over each other yet they both claim to be the better.
Thomas, a rangy boxer, loves to fight on the outside while Amsterdam, squatty and muscular, prefers to battle it out at close range. Such contrasting styles will pave the way for an imminent slugfest which could very well determine, once and for all, who is the better boxer. This is a must-see affair.

Another eagerly anticipated contest is the bantamweight elite battle between Keevin Allicock and Clairmont Gibson. The two clashed in the National Open Championships a few weeks ago and Allicock managed to secure the win.
However, it was not easy-going as he was forced to call on all his reserves to stem the flow of a rampaging Gibson. The former boxer was adjudged the winner but Gibson swore that he was ‘done-in’ and vowed to take matters into his own hands in a return encounter.
The Boxing Night clash provides that opportunity and fans should come prepared for a mouth-watering encounter.

When the first gong sounds, junior boxer Shamar Morrison of the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) will match gloves with Emanuel Pompey one bout before Shaquincy Wright of the Vergenoogen Boxing Gym (VBG) versus K. Yayah of the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym (PRBG). Exciting flyweight pugilist Julius Kesney of the Rose Hall Jammers (RHJ) will tackle Kelvin Moore (VBG) in an elite flyweight contest.

Junior boxers, Travis Inverary (FYF) and Jaden Graham of the Young Achievers (YA) will next grace the ring in a fight that is much talked about. Both boxers have earned the right to be touted as top boxers and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top.
Guyana Defence Force representative Colin Lewis has made quite a name for himself and has recently returned from St Lucia with a gold medal in the Caribbean Development Tournament. He will be sizzling hot and ready to square off with Marlon Darryl (FYF) in a junior welterweight elite matchup.

Two GDF representatives, Aubrey Headley and John Mars, will oppose each other in a contest for bragging rights as well as championship honours while Alex Murray (FYF) will attempt to keep the (Andrew) Murray legacy alive when he squares off with Akeem Crandon of the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym.

The card will be graced with two female bouts which will see Alicia Rodney, from the newly inaugurated Savannah Boxing Gym (SBG) clash with Abiola Jackman (FYF).
Aleema Arokium (RHJ) takes on Army representative Joan Williams in a female elite flyweight battle.
Fans are urged to come out in their numbers to witness the action which promises fireworks from ‘gong to gong’.
