LOCAL boxing pundits accustomed to the hectic slugfests of the 70s and early 80s, staged on Boxing Day, will be delighted to learn that the organizers of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) have arranged a special event for December 26, dubbed “Sons of Champions Punch out” at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.

The one night extravaganza has been so christened in keeping with the composition of the card wherein featured boxers would have had a father or other close relative who have made a distinct impression in the sport.
Leon ‘Hurry Up’ Moore had created waves on the local boxing scene and was among the best punchers. Several of his sons have followed in his footsteps and come boxing night, the eldest of the bunch, Isaiah, will be among the feature attraction.
This youngster is no slouch and has had overseas exposure in Barbados where he defeated all and sundry to capture gold in that country.

A rangy boxer, Moore possesses deceptive power and many of his opponents were deceived by his skinny stature, that is, until he connected with his wicked combinations.
Keevin ‘Lightning’ Allicock is the latest commodity in the square jungle and he has been making quite a name for himself. He won gold in Barbados last year at the Caribbean Development Tournament (now Caribbean Championship) and bolstered his status with a commanding performance in the Commonwealth Youth Games, staged in Nassau Bahamas earlier this year, which earned him a silver medal. The young pugilist rose out of a boxing family, but it seems as though he intends to clinch the spotlight by outdoing his predecessors.

However, it will not be easy-going for the Olympic aspirant as his nemesis, Clairmonte Gibson, will be aiming to put a damper to his aspirations. The latter pugilist tangled with Allicock in the recently-concluded Terrence Alli National Open Boxing Championships in what has been dubbed the fight of the tournament.
The two warriors went after each other. It was indeed a close encounter in the first round, but Allicock managed to later stamp his authority and removed the bantamweight title from Gibson’s waist, following a stoppage in the second round and was adjudged Best Boxer. Gibson was not pleased and vowed to avenge the loss at the earliest opportunity. The Boxing Day card will present that opportunity and fans are advised not to miss the fireworks.

President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle, said that the card is an appropriate way to close off the year which, though filled with challenges, has brought out the best in the boxers.
He also mentioned the challenges faced by his executives to field a team to the current Development Tournament in St Lucia. “We could have only afforded to send a small squad, but those boxers are representing us well,” he said.
“The impending tournament will be regarded as a fund-raiser to offset expenses of other important engagements during the New Year,” informed Mr. Ninvalle. As such, he is urging the sporting public to fill the venue. The action gets underway at 19:30hrs sharp.
