Annual DDL-sponsored 60-mile cycle road race set for Sunday

GUYANA’s top cyclists are expected to turn out in their numbers on Sunday when cycle coach Hassan Mohamed runs off the annual Demerara Distillers Limited’s 60-mile race under its Diamond Mineral Water brand.

This year’s event will see a new champion being crowned as last year’s winner, Alonzo Greaves, is currently serving a two-year ban imposed on him by the World Anti-Doping Association (WADA) for drug use during the 2015 National Sports Commission’s Five Stage Cycle Road Race.

Greaves was given a one-year ban for drug use after he tested positive at the completion of the five-stage event.
After serving his one year ban, the Caribbean Anti- Doping Association (CADA) appealed the light sentence imposed. However, Greaves was free to compete during that time and secured podium places during that period and won last year’s Diamond Mineral Water race.

However, after WADA reviewed the CADA’s appeal, WADA added a further two-year ban on Greaves.
So, this year’s event should be a very interesting and exciting one.

At the moment, Team COCO’s Jamal John is dominating the local scene; his latest success was on Saturday last when he won the Team United ‘We Stand’ 30-lap `dash for Cash’ race in the National Park, narrowly edging Continental Cycle Club’s Geron Williams across the finish line.
