THE Lions Club of Bel-Air will today be providing 50 free lunches for visually impaired persons at the Guyana Society for the Blind on High Street from 11:30hrs.
The event, an annual feature, is in observance of Sight Conservation Month, according to Lions President, Tara Naraine. World Sight Conservation Day was observed on October 12.
Another gesture undertaken by the Lions Club of Bel Air was the screening of 34 children from the Shaheed Boys & Girls Orphanages.
The Club had teamed up with the Guyana United Sadr Islamic Anjuman to facilitate the screening of the orphans residing at both their Oleander Gardens, East Coast Demerara, and Alexander Street, Kitty facilities.

The screening was done at the Kitty Orphanage to determine whether the children will need follow-up testing.
The Lions team was led by Lion Naraine, accompanied by Chairperson of the Sight Conservation Committee, Lion Natalia Azeez and Chairperson of the Diabetes Committee, Lion Candace Forde, and other members of the Club.
Meanwhile, the Club, in collaboration with the St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital conducts a free medical clinic every month at the Lions Club on Enachu Street, Campbellville. Additionally, a Sight Conservation Project involving three schools, which commenced in May has been completed, Lion Naraine reported. She said that a total of 260 children were screened from the three schools, namely: Redeemer Primary; Bel-Air Primary; and Campbellville Secondary.
Sixty children have since been shorted-listed and had their eyes tested by Dr.Yohan Da Sliva of Modern Optical Service on Middle Street. Coming out of this, a total of 48 have since been outfitted with spectacles, at a reduced cost.
