A FAMILY at Lot 135 `A’ Mibicuri South, Black Bush Polder, East Berbice,

Corentyne, suffered severe losses totaling in excess of $20Mafter a two storyed- wooden and concrete structure went up in flames.

The fire which started at approximately 07:30hrs on Saturday,quickly engulfed the house destroying the business that was housed on the bottom flat along with millions of dollars in stocks and farming supplies were destroyed.

Speaking with the Guyana Chronicle, the owner Marvin Duncan,75, he said that he and wife and his wife,Gladeys, 65, had secured their home and left to attend an eventin Port Mourant when they received a call indicating that the home was on fire.

“I turn back and came to see, and when I reach the entire house was on fire. Nobody couldn’t save anything,” a clearly distressed Duncan added

According to the rice farmer and businessman, he has been living at the location for the last 20 years, and together with his wife, they worked hard to ensure a comfortable life. He had been operating the grocery shop for the same period also, he said.

Duncan who noted that “the fire started at the back of the home where there were four barrels of
diesel. It looks like one of them was manually opened,” explained that he had a matter in court with a neighbor which led to the magistrate placing the accused on a two-year bond to keep the peace.
