A 62-year-old Colombian national was on Friday fined $50,000 for overstaying here.
Maria Medina appeared before City Magistrate, Judy Latchman and pleaded guilty to the charge which alleged that between July 21, 2017 and September 4, 2017 at Georgetown, she overstayed her time.
It is alleged that Medina failed to comply with an entry permit which allowed her to stay in Guyana for one month, June 21, 2017 to July 20, 2017.
According to reports, Medina arrived in Guyana via the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on June 21, 2017 and was granted a one-month stay. However on September 04, 2017, police at Mabura stopped a Route 94 minibus in which the Colombian national was a passenger.
The woman who was searched also ordered to produce her Colombian passport which indicated that she overstayed her time here.
An unrepresented Medina, with the aid of an interpreter, told the court that she is a cancer survivor and had undergone two surgeries for her cancer. She begged the Magistrate not to deport her as her country is experiencing economic turmoil.
The Magistrate in imposing the fine, ordered that should the woman be unable to pay she should serve 14 days in jail, following which she would be deported to Colombia.
