WHEN the dust settled for the three-day historical Inter-Guiana Games (IGG), Guyana and Suriname equally shared the spoils of the six contested disciplines for the 50th edition of the event.

Guyana dominated, as was expected, the cycling event, volleyball and track and field. However, Suriname took the football title, swimming and basketball.
Unlike previous years, this time around, according to the games protocol signed by the two countries, there will be no overall winner.
Director of Sport Christopher Jones told the gathering of athletes and government officials at the closing ceremony on Sunday, that the Government of Guyana and by extension the National Sports Commission (NSC), under his directive, will strive for betterment of the IGG; a brainchild of former President Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham.
Jones commended the athletes for competing in the true spirit of the games, adding he was more so proud of the Guyanese contingent for being good ambassadors and showing great sportsmanship.

Suriname’s Director of Sport Luciano Mentowikromo spoke highly of the importance of the IGG, calling it a bridge between the two countries using sports.
However, Mentowikromo and Jones, made it clear that together they will be working overtime to include French Guiana which was rocked by unrest earlier this year.
