THE Guyana National Under-19 cricket team defeated the Windward Islands by 6 runs yesterday to be crowned the 2017 CWI Regional Under-19 50-overs tournament champions.
The title was even more prestigious, as it enabled Guyana to claim other honoree positions, namely retaining the one-day Title they won in 2016 and securing the 2017 double championship, that of the CWI Regional 3-Day tournament and the CWI Regional 50-overs tournament.
The 2017 CWI Regional 50 overs tournament, saw Guyana convincingly win all six of their matches, against such opponents as ICC Americas, Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Leeward Islands, and Windward Islands.
In yesterday’s match played at Warner Park in St Kitts, Guyana, batted first and reached 217 all out, with Raymond Perez scoring a masterful 77 and Joshua Persaud a solid 40. Bowling for Windward Islands, Dillon Douglas took 3 for 32, Jaheseon Alexander 2 for 24 and Alick Athanaze 2 for 43..
Windward Islands in reply were only able to score 211 in 49.4 overs, Emmanuel Stewart hitting 48, and Wayne Edwards 43.
Bowling for Guyana, Richie Looknauth grabbed 3 for 31 and off-spinner Bhaskar Yadram 2 for 35. Guyana won the match by 6 runs.
The National Under-19 team will return to Guyana today via the Eugene F. Correia International Airport, Ogle, at 14:00hrs.
The Guyana Cricket Board is extremely elated and congratulates the team on their remarkable feat of obtaining the double championship title.
Meanwhile, dethroned champions Trinidad and Tobago defeated the hapless Jamaica by six wickets while Barbados beat the Leeward Islands by five wickets.
