St Rose’s student tops at CAPE

GUYANA recorded a 92.57 percent pass rate with grades 1-5 at this year’s Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) as opposed to 86.74 percent in 2016.

Some 851 candidates from nine secondary schools and four private institutions sat this year’s exams in May-June. Of those, 16.47% of the entries attained Grade 1, 22.90% attained Grade 2, 22.93 attained Grade 3, and 18.08 attained Grade 4, while 13% of the students attained Grade 5.

One hundred percent pass rate (with Grades one to five passes) were obtained in 30 units which include, Agricultural Science Unit 1 and Unit 2; Art & Design Unit 1 and Unit 2; Computer Science Unit 1; Food and Nutrition Unit 1 and Unit 2; Geography Unit 1 and Unit 2; Information Technology Unit 1 and Unit 2; Animation & Gaming Unit 1 and Unit 2; Spanish Unit 1 and Unit 2.

Among those were also Physical Education and Sports Unit 1 and Unit 2; Digital Media Unit 1 and Unit 2; Entrepreneurship Unit 1 and Unit 2; Green Engineering Unit 1; Logistics and Supply Chain Operations Unit 1; Building & Mechanical Engineering Drawing (Building) Unit 1 and Unit 2; Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology Unit 1; Applied Mathematics Unit 2; Environmental Science Unit 2; Tourism Unit 2 and Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology Unit 2.

Green Engineering, which was written for the first time, saw 100% pass rate. Animation and Gaming Design was also a new subject this year and was written for the first time electronically, along with Digital Media, which also attained a 100% pass rate.

Several candidates recorded outstanding performances. Among the top performers are Shawn Shewram of St Rose’s High and Vamanadev Hiralall of Saraswati Vidya Niketan, who secured Grade One passes in eight units. Other outstanding performers were Ashley Anthony and Shannon Woodroffe of Queen’s College.
