THE decomposed body of 19-year-old Esther Weekes, of Silver Town Wismar Linden, washed up Tuesday afternoon in the Demerara River proximity to where she drowned on Sunday, while taking a bath with relatives.

Pandemonium broke out on the Wismar shore as the relatives of the late teen and residents of Silver Town and surrounding areas heard that the body had been discovered. A large crowd quickly filled the boat landing to have a glimpse of the body. Esther was a former student of the Christianburg-Wismar Secondary School.

On Sunday around 13:00 hrs she was bathing in the Demerara River in the vicinity of the Rivers View Hotel when she went under the water, while trying to save her cousin. Her aunt, who was also present, could not have done so since she too cannot swim.

Over the past years, many persons drowned in the Upper Demerara River while swimming. While it is a regular habit for residents along Burnham Drive to use the water to bathe and for other domestic purposes, residents and the police are calling for more precaution to be made, especially when swimming in the deeper parts of the river.
