THE New Opportunity Corps (NOC) in Onderneeming, Essequibo Coast, Region Two, is now under the wings of the Ministry of Social Protection.

The transition was facilitated by now Education Minister Nicolette Henry, who said “President David Granger has made a wise choice.”

She went on to mention that the President visited the institution, made an assessment and decided that the Minister of Social Protection with her apt experience is the right candidate to manage the institution as a ministry.

Social Protection Minister Amna Ally was candid as to her expectations of how things should be done, as some of the staff sat in intrigue and agreement to some of the comments she made.

She went on to set the records straight as to the ‘modus operandi’ under her watch as Minister of Social Protection and made it clear to the staff that skullduggery on the job would not be tolerated.

She urged them to be punctual, disciplined and to pull their ‘boot straps up’ as she introduced ideas and solutions that can be taken to remedy situations where staff encounter trouble when interfacing with juveniles in the institution.

Hearing some of the challenges of the staff, Minister Ally immediately followed up the hand-over session by having a pep-talk with juveniles at the centre.

“Minister Ally sat in the presence of 48 boys and 31 girls under a benab, to remind those present of what the NOC is, how to conduct themselves and the consequence of good behaviour versus ill-mannered behaviour,” a release from the Social Protection Ministry said.

The NOC is a penal governmental institution that was established in 1879. It is a correctional facility for youths in the hope of rehabilitating and reintegrating them into society as better individuals.
