Haitians injured after car hits donkey

FIVE Haitians who were reportedly heading to Suriname have suffered injuries after the car in which they were travelling hit a donkey on the Number 53 Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice Friday morning.

The accident reportedly occurred at 05:15 hrs and the car in which they were travelling HC 5547 was driven by a fireman of Corentyne, Berbice. Police are investigating if the injured were victims of trafficking-in-persons.

Reports say the car was proceeding north along the western side corridor of the road at a fast rate when a donkey suddenly ran into its path.

The driver tried to swerve away from the animal and lost control of the vehicle which toppled several times before coming to a halt.

Passengers Dossier Farantazcia, 15; Dia Doxine, 19; Helas Naima, 5; Dossier James, 15; and Ony Jean Pierre, 15 were injured in the accident.

They were taken to Skeldon Hospital where they were seen by a doctor who treated the driver and Dossier Farantazcia for minor injury.

The other passengers who suffered more serious injuries were transferred to New Amsterdam Public Hospital where they have been admitted.

The driver has been arrested and is in custody at the Number 51 Police Stations.
