— city Deputy Mayor
THE Markets Public Health Committee of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has called for the Council, through the administration, to implement a contingency fund that would cater for minor repairs to the municipal markets.
Just recently, Deputy Mayor Lionel Jaikarran accused Town Clerk Royston King of dragging his feet on the issue and issuing the committee several excuses when the matter comes up at their meetings.
“This fund would be used to do minor things; repair the roof, replace lights bulbs, instead of running to the town clerk, ‘Oh we need a zinc sheet and seven lights bulbs.’ We can do this; it’s within our scope,” Jaikarran told Guyana Chronicle.
According to what he has in mind, the Markets Committee will not be handling any of the cash.
“But we tell them who to write the cheques to and that’s it. Completely above board,” he said, adding: “It’s designed to take some of the headache away from the town clerk and City engineer and to leave them to bigger matters; not a piece of wood falling to hit someone.”
Jaikarran has made this proposal since January.
