Intense rivalry anticipated for annual Cheddi Jagan memorial cycle road race

THIS Sunday cycle fans and enthusiasts can expect keen rivalry when cycle coach Hassan Mohamed stages the 20th annual Cheddi Jagan memorial cycle road race in Berbice, beginning at 09:00hrs.

Defending champion Marlon `Fishy’ Williams who won the event last year in a time of two hours 15 minutes 40 seconds will be hard-pressed to make a successful defence of his title, as at present he does not seem to be in-form from three season-opening events – the Annual Ricks and Sari race; the R&R International Road Race and the Flying Stars Cycle Club’s Annual Forbes Burnham Memorial Three-Stage Road race.

Currently, the in-form cyclists are Hamza Eastman, Stephano Husbands and Andrew Hicks and these three riders are expected to `hot up’ Sunday’s event which gets underway from outside the People’s Progressive Party’s Berbice headquarters in New Amsterdam, proceeds to Number 51 Village Corentyne, and returns to finish at Port Mourant, where the presentation of prizes to the respective winners will be done by PPP’s executive members.
The event is open to cyclists from all across Guyana and apart from the open category, the first three juniors, the first three veterans, the first three mountain bikers and the first over-60 rider will receive prizes for their efforts.

Last year’s junior winner was Raphael Leung. Richard Charles, Whitney Poyer and Monty Parris were the respective winners of the mountain bike, female, and Over-60 categories.
Cyclists are asked to take note that transportation from Georgetown to Berbice will leave the People’s Progressive Party head office in Robb Street, Lacytown, at 05:00hrs on Sunday.
