Businessman, female friend charged with trafficking teenager

CHIEF Magistrate Ann McLennan on Tuesday granted a businessman and a woman $500,000 bail after they were charged with trafficking a 15-year-old girl for sexual exploitation.

Businessman, Mahadsa Thomas and Speedboat Captain, Kenisha Hill were jointly charged with the offence which alleged that between February 1 and February 24, 2017 at Supenaam, Essequibo they recruited, transported and harbored a 15-year-old for sexual exploitation.

The matter was held in camera and the duo pleaded not guilty to the charge. They were released on bail and the matter was transferred to the Suddie Magistrate’s Court for March 17, 2017.

According to reports, the businessman and boat captain from Supenaam were arrested by detectives following the rescue operation which took place on February 24, 2017 following a ‘tip-off.’

It was disclosed that persons notified the police ranks about the presence of the young lady who was being used for financial gains by the businessman and his friend. The teenager was taken for a medical examination at the Suddie Hospital where it was discovered that she has been sexually active.
